Dance of the Drunken Monks (2003)
My role: rehearsal direction
Dance of the Drunken Monks is a play written by King Mahendra Varma specifically for the theatrical style of Koodiattam. This Sankalpam production utilises text as the starting point to create a provocative and unusual blend of farce, social commentary and theatrical display. The play centres on the drunken antics of a Kapalika monk and his woman. The Kapalikas were a highly unorthodox Savite sect (followers of Siva), whose rites included drinking, wild dancing and singing and ritual intercourse with their partners The production toured the UK in Spring and Autumn 2003.
