Antaraal (2016)
My role: rehearsal direction and dramaturgy
“Each time I work with Debbie I learn an incredible amount about my own practice. She is thoughtful and really detailed and above all, I feel that she truly hears me and understands me."
- Anuradha Chaturvedi
Antaraal was my first project with Anuradha Chaturvedi and Drishti Dance, and also my first experience rehearsing in the Kathak form. Antaraal is a contemporary Kathak work that explores movement as experienced through the spaces in between. It was a collaboration between composer Malcolm Atkins and poet Mohan Rana, and it premiered in Moving With The Times (2016) in Oxford, followed by The Resolution at The Place in London.
The piece was later re-envisioned as Auk Ek Antaraal, an interpretive dance work exploring the nuances of the contemporary Hindi poem Aur Ek Antraal, written by India-based poet Dr. Rashmi Chaturvedi and set to music by renowned classical Indian composers Gulshan Bharati and Hem Singh. This version was presented at the Offbeat Festival 2018 at The Old Fire Station in Oxford.
