Off the Walls (2025)

My role: concept and choreography

“Creating music and soundscapes for Debbie is both creatively fulfilling and enormous fun, she has great ideas and intuition, is playful and encouraging while also having a really clear vision of how to get the best out of those involved in a project” - Barnaby Taylor, composer and sound designer

“Debbie has a unique, playful approach to generating movement and bringing textural ideas to life. She has an artful way of pooling different disciplines and extracting the best out of people in a supportive and sometimes mischievous way! There is always a lot of laughter, reflection and respect in the studio” - Polly Motley, performer participant

Off the Walls is an interdisciplinary project responding to the artwork, ideas and humanity of painter and multimedia artist Matthew Lanyon (1951–2016). Son of modernist artist Peter Lanyon, Matthew created work that pulsed with energy, humour and protest, rooted in the Cornish landscape yet addressing grief, mortality, desire and time.

Since his death, the Matthew Lanyon Archive has safeguarded his astonishing legacy. With kind permission of the archive’s Director, Judith Lanyon, I’ve begun to explore Matthew’s paintings, writings and objects, drawn to the physicality and urgency that vibrate through them. This project seeks to let that energy resonate through movement, sound and text, opening space for new artistic voices to emerge.
