Freedom on the Tyne (2017)
My role: movement direction
“I know from an ongoing and wide-ranging dialogue with her, how charged and genuine Debbie’s commitment is to the social and communal conditions that surround our work - the ethics of how we make it, where, who with and, most of all, who for?”
Tim Supple, Director FOTT
Freedom on the Tyne was a mass, multi-disciplinary performance across Newcastle Gateshead on 29 October 2019, culminating in a triumphant march to and performance on the Tyne Bridge. I was Associate Director with overall responsibility for movement, collaborating with professionals, community groups, and under-represented communities across the city.
Inspired by Dr Martin Luther King Jr. and global civil rights struggles, the performance wove together stories from Selma, Amritsar, Sharpeville, Peterloo, and the Jarrow March. As night fell, the uplifting climax on the Tyne Bridge held the city in suspended wonder, creating a breathtaking moment of light, sound, movement, and theatre.
